12-year-old girl in custody, Manipur furious

Imphal:

Manipur is angry and desperate for help. For four nights, a 12-year-old girl has been kept hostage at a police station in Imphal.

Vidyarani Chanu, a Class 6 student, was seized by the combined force of Manipur Commandos and the army on the 14th of this month.  Officials claim her father is a militant on the run.

Vidyarani is being kept in custody Mayang Imphal police station while her parents are missing.

Residents have appealed to the Governor for help. They want the child to be released immediately, and the commandos responsible be punished.

Manipur has spent the past month on edge after a young man was killed in an alleged fake encounter in July.

Residents of the state have asked for President's rule. They say there's a complete breakdown of law and order in the state.
