Srinagar:
An Army soldier was killed in a sniper attack by Pakistani troops who targeted forward posts in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, in a violation of the ceasefire between the two countries on Wednesday night.
Rachpal Singh was critically injured when Pakistani troops fired at a post in Poonch along the Line of Control (LoC), a police officer said today. He later died.
Colonel SD Goswami, a spokesman for the Indian army, said Pakistani troops had opened "unprovoked fire" Wednesday evening targeting Indian positions.
"Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire again during which our soldier was injured who died later," Goswami told AFP, adding that the Indian side had returned fire.
This is the third incident of sniper attack by Pakistani troops along the LoC this month. Two Border Security Force jawans were killed in similar incidents in the Kashmir Valley.
There were two other incidents of ceasefire violations yesterday.
Earlier in July, Pakistan had killed two border guards and one civilian in Kashmir.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday told the Indian Parliament that the three attackers behind the assault on the police station Punjab's Gurdaspur on Monday, which left seven people dead, may have travelled from Pakistan.
