Hyderabad: Two little girls were killed allegedly by their mother in their home in Hyderabad last evening. Rajini Chutke allegedly slit the throats of her daughters, eight-year-old Ashwika and three-year-old Awishka, using a broken jam jar.

Ashwika was watching TV at around 9 pm and her sister was sleeping when their mother attacked them, the police say.

Around 45 minutes later, their father Vinay Chutke returned from his gift shop and found the front door ajar and his wife missing. He found his daughters covered in blood, one under the bed and the other in the bathroom.

Rajini, a 40-year-old MBA graduate, had allegedly suspected for months that her husband was abusing his daughters.

On Thursday morning, as shocked members of the family, friends and neighbours gathered at the Chutke house in north Hyderabad, Rajini's mother held her hands and wept for her granddaughters.

"I am sad they are dead but I have liberated them," Rajini told her calmly, according to witnesses.

Rajini, say the police, also messaged her friends that she had killed her daughters to "liberate" them from abuse and harassment.

The police said she tried to jump into the Hussainsagar Lake, then returned home and confessed.

"She said she went to the Tank Bund area to cleanse herself after killing the girls,'' senior police officer Prakash Reddy told NDTV.

Rajini is believed to have told the police that she had suspected her husband for six months. She claimed that her older daughter had told her someone had touched her inappropriately and she appeared to tremble in fear in her father's presence.

The couple had reportedly fought bitterly over the last week.

The police say there is no evidence so far of the alleged abuse. The family is from Maharashtra and shifted to Hyderabad a few years ago.
