Guwahati:
Atleast 65 newborns had a miraculous escape when they were shifted in the nick of time after a fire broke out in the neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) at midnight.
Patients and their attendants raised an alarm on seeing the fire last night and the babies were immediately shifted to the labour ward of the hospital by doctors, nurses, attendants of patients, GMCH Superintendent Dr Ramen Talukdar said in Guwahati today.
Two fire tenders rushed to spot and extinguished the fire within half-an-hour.
The fire was most likely caused due to an electric short circuit, sources said.
The hospital authorities have instituted an inquiry into the incident.
