Property dealer arrested for making extortion calls to relative in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: A man was arrested in Gurgaon on Saturday for trying to extort money from a property dealer, who was also his relative, by pretending to be an underworld don based in the Gulf, police said.

Ashish Thapar, a resident of DLF Phase 5 in Gurgaon, got a telephone call on May 17, purportedly from Dubai demanding Rs. four crore. Mr Thapar was told to pay up or get killed.

Sushant Lok police station chief Gaurav Fhogat told reporters that police tapped some mobile telephones that led them to Gaurav Sahagal, who had reportedly made the extortion call.

Mr Sahagal was a relative of the victim and was also a property dealer, police said.
