  • A team from UK-based Muslim Aid charity group created the largest samosa
  • The whopping snack weighed around 153.1 kilos
  • Over 20 people were employed to carry out the mega task
The world of food records witnessed another mammoth entry with a team from UK-based Muslim Aid charity group creating the largest samosa of all time. The whopping snack weighed around 153.1 kilos and was deep fried at a mosque in East London in a custom-build vat. Over 20 people were employed to carry out the mega task of prepping the snack which was supposed to be triangular in shape and made with flour, potatoes, peas and onions - common ingredients used in cooking a typical samosa.

Another parameter was the total weight of the snack and that the mega-snack should be consumed without any occurrence of food wastage. The samosa was cut into hundreds of portions and was distributed to the homeless of the city. We reached out to Muslim Aid UK to learn more about their experience; Farid Islam, Senior Fundraising Officer, Muslim Aid UK was more than enthusiastic in answering our queries. "The idea was to do something which would involve and bring together people from all walks of life and different communities. The process was grueling and beyond challenging. The entire kitchen looked like a construction site. We had a crane to lift up the entire samosa. We also had to get various environmental, food safety and hygiene permits before commencing the process," shared Farid.

According to Farid, the actual planning and prepping began almost a month prior to the event. "We started cooking a day prior to the event, which was Monday morning when we prepared the filing and the masala for the samosa, rest was done on Tuesday," noted Farid.

Roughly 100kgs of potatoes, 30kgs of onions, 11kgs of peas and close to 25kgs of pastry material were used for dishing out the largest samosa in the world. "We are absolutely elated. When the final lifting was happening, I remember I was so anxious; I was like, God please, I am going to cry if this falls or breaks at the last moment. We would be more than happy to attempt something similar in the future if given a chance," concluded Farid.

This is not the first time when a group of enthusiasts attempted frying the popular Asian snack. The Muslim Aid team smashed the record which was previously held by a team at the Bradford College, UK in the year 2012. The Bradford samosa weighed around 110.8kgs. "The samosa measured 135 cm long (53 in), 85 cm wide (33 in) and 29 cm high (11 in)," mentions the official Guinness World Records website. Back home, a group of boys from Gorakhpur attempted making the largest samosa that weighed close to 332kgs. According to various reports, the samosa was prepped using 90 litre oil, 2 quintal potatoes and 1.75 quintal flour.
