Food safety authorities in Telangana have seized a large amount of spoiled meat during a state-wide enforcement drive, with the largest seizure recorded in Nalgonda district, as per the officials. As per an update shared by the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, on April 1, the authorities have seized around 146 kgs of spoiled and non-compliant meat in a drive that was conducted on April 1. This inspection came as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety enforcement across the state.

68 Inspections Conducted Across Districts

According to the update, food safety officials carried out a total of 68 inspections during the statewide meat drive. As part of the checks, authorities lifted 33 samples for further analysis and issued 56 notices to food business operators for various violations. Officials said the enforcement action led to the seizure of approximately 146 kg of spoiled meat, including a major seizure of 110 kg in Nalgonda, indicating serious lapses in meat handling and storage practices.

Hygiene Lapses Found At Storage Facilities

During the inspections, officials observed unhygienic conditions in cold storage equipment at several locations. Authorities also noted that widely mandated food safety practices such as the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) and First-Expired, First-Out (FEFO) systems were not being implemented, increasing the risk of unsafe meat being sold to consumers.

Notices Issued Under The Food Safety Act

The Commissioner of Food Safety said improvement notices were issued under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act for violations related to Schedule IV hygiene provisions. Authorities also initiated strict action on licensing violations across districts as part of the drive.

Food safety officials said such inspections and enforcement actions would continue to ensure compliance with hygiene standards and protect public health.

The spoiled meat seizure comes a day after 4,000 kgs of fake ginger-garlic paste, 6,210 kg of low-quality raw materials, and related items worth about Rs 22 lakh were busted and seized at a Kattedan operating unit. As per the details shared by the Hyderabad City Police on X, the unit was operating under unhygienic conditions, using inferior raw materials and additives such as acetic acid and xanthan gum, and failing to follow proper food safety standards.
