The trailer of Sonata features Aparna Sen, Shabana Azmi and Lilette Dubey as three friends, each with their signature characteristics which distinctly separate one from the other. Ms Azmi is the outspoken, free-spirited of the lot and says: "I sway through life with abandon." Ms Sen, who appears to have a reflective outlook towards like, is more naive. "Not so loud, someone might hear you," she tells Ms Azmi's character. Meanwhile, Ms Dubey tries to conceal her abusive relationship with the words: "I like to smell like my man."

The trailer ends with a realisation, which dawns upon the three friends, and they say: "What aweful creatures we are. No commitment, no aim, no ideology. We are not even feminists."
