During the 94th Academy Awards, when Chris Rock was presenting the Oscar Award for Best Documentary Feature, he made a joke about Will Smith's wife and actress Jada Pinkett Smith's shaven head look. He said, "GI Joe 2, can't wait to see it." Hearing the same, Will Smith went up on the stage, slapped Chris, and yelled, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth."

However, when he won the Best Actor Award for King Richard, he apologised to Chris Rock and said, "I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award. It's not about winning an award for me. It's about being able to shine a light on all of the people. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things."

This year the Oscars for Best Picture was won by CODA and Dune won six awards.
