The Sundargarh lok sabha constituency recorded 71.44 per cent voter turnout this time. The Sundargarh lok sabha seat is one of the 21 lok sabha constituencies in Odisha and consists of Talsara, Sundargarh, Biramitrapur, Raghunathpali, Rourkela, Rajgangpur and Bonai. Except the Rourkela seat, rest are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe categories.

The Sundargarh is as much a BJP bastion as it is a Congress forte'. The ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party has been winning the Sundargarh seat since 1998; though it lost the grip in 2009, it regained the power in 2014 election.

Jual Oram, the sitting MP, is currently in his fourth term in the Sundargarh constituency and is contesting for the seat as well. He had succeeded and defeated Congress' Hemananda Biswal in 2014 general election. Hemananda Biswal, a former Chief Minister of Odisha, was the first tribal chief minister of Odisha.

In 2014 election, BJP won the Sundargarh seat by a margin of 18829 votes.

BJD had second majority in vote count in the last election. This time the party is fielding Sunita Biswal as its MP candidate.

Congress' George Tirkey will also be contesting for the Sundargarh seat.

A total of 8 candidates are in fray for the Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency among which are 2 are independent candidates.

Among regional parties contesting for this constituency are Hindusthan Nirman Dal, Aam Aadmi Party and SUCI (Communist).
