Amethi:
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, two-time MP from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, held a roadshow in his constituency on Sunday where he said he has a familial relationship with the area and will always work for its development.
"I always get an overwhelming response in Amethi, I have family ties with this place. My relationship with Amethi is based on love and I will give my whole life to Amethi," he told NDTV.
A large number of Congress supporters gathered to catch a glimpse of Mr Gandhi and his sister Priyanka, who accompanied him in the roadshow. The vehicle carrying them moved slowly during the 2 km journey as the huge crowd waved Congress flags and shouted slogans eulogising Mr Gandhi. Some enthusiastic supporters also showered rose petals at them.
This was the second roadshow by Mr Gandhi and Ms Vadra in the constituency. Mr Gandhi, accompanied by his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi as well as Ms Vadra, staged a roadshow ahead of filing his nomination for the constituency on April 12.
Though Mr Gandhi has been representing Amethi in the Lok Sabha since 2004, he is facing a tough contest this time. While the BJP has fielded actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani from Amethi, Aam Aadmi Party's Kumar Vishwas, a close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, is the party's candidate from the constituency which has come to be regarded as a Gandhi family bastion. Amethi votes on May 7. (Amethi Will be 'betraying' the Country if it Votes for Congress or BJP: Arvind Kejriwal)
