The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a module on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The module aims to develop critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of the responsible use of emerging technologies.

Designed for students with no prior knowledge of AI, the module introduces Computational Thinking (CT) as a systematic approach to problem-solving. It also helps students understand how AI works, its applications, potential, and limitations.

According to NCERT, the module follows an experiential, activity-based learning approach that incorporates discussions, practical exercises, experimentation, and reflection. Activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, enabling students to participate meaningfully across diverse school settings.

The module places particular emphasis on the ethical and safe use of AI, covering data privacy, misinformation, fairness, digital safety, and the critical evaluation of AI-generated information. It encourages students to become informed, confident, and responsible users of technology while reinforcing the importance of human judgement, creativity, and ethical responsibility in learning.

Praneet Mungali, an educationist and trustee of the Sanskriti Group of Schools, Pune, said the introduction of AI education from Class 9 marks a significant step towards preparing students for an increasingly technology-driven world.

He said that as AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, professional activities, and decision-making processes, students need to learn not only how to use AI tools but also where they can be applied and what their limitations are.

"Early learning provides a firm foundation in skills such as critical thinking, creativity, logical reasoning, and problem-solving, equipping students with the knowledge and ability to create technology," he added.

Mungali said the NCERT module enables students, including those with no prior knowledge of AI, to learn about the subject through an experiential, activity-based approach. He noted that practical exercises and discussions help students develop a better understanding of AI, while the flexibility to conduct activities with or without digital devices makes the module accessible across diverse school settings.

He also emphasised the importance of teaching students to critically evaluate AI-generated information and consider the ethical implications of using AI technologies, noting that these skills would become increasingly important in the future.

"The module emphasises the responsible use of AI, digital safety, data privacy, and fairness, while helping students identify false or biased information. It is important for learners to critically evaluate information generated by AI systems and develop the ability to assess the ethical implications of using these technologies," he said.
