New Delhi: An 82-year-old woman was robbed in her house at around 3 pm on Wednesday in south Delhi's Delhi Defence Colony, say the police.

Mrs Puri is the mother of Manjeev Puri, India's deputy envoy to the United Nations. A widower, she lives alone in her Defence Colony home.

At around 3 pm on Wednesday, two men claiming to belong to a courier company came to Mrs Puri's house and when she told them she was not expecting any courier, the two allegedly forced their way into her house, according to the police.

While one of them pinned her to the ground, one of them searched the house for money, valuables, etc., the police said. They allegedly took Rs 20,000 and some jewellery that she was wearing.

The police also suspect that her driver might have played a role in the crime as he had left a few minutes before the crime occurred saying he would be back in 10 minutes; however, he did not return for an hour.

Mrs Puri, who did not sustain any major injuries, lodged a complaint with the police. She has not named any suspects, police said.
