Man gets duped of two Audi SUVs, 35 lakhs

New Delhi: A 27-year-old man has been arrested on the charge of duping a Delhi-based businessman of his two Audi SUVs on the pretext of selling the vehicles at a reasonable price.

The anti-Extortion Cell of Crime Branch on November 30 had apprehended Sumit Walia, alias Sunny Walia, who had allegedly duped the businessman of Rs 35 lakh promising him help in import of Porsche SUV, a police statement said.

"A complaint was lodged by Harshvardhan Reddy, a resident of Vasant Vihar against one Sumit Walia alleging that in December 2011, the accused took his two Audi A-7 cars on the pretext of selling it at reasonable price. Sumit Walia also promised him that he would help him import a new Porsche SUV through any Embassy in Delhi.

"Walia took Rs 35 lakh as advance from the complainant as import duty for the Porche Car. As a security, he gave two cheques of Rs 15 lakh and 20 lakh each to complainant," S B S Tyagi, DCP Crime and Railways, said in the statement.

Walia had not joined the investigation since the lodging of the complaint against him on charges of criminal breach of trust under the IPC and had also changed his rented address, the police said.

The complaint was lodged by Reddy after Walia had started avoiding queries from him regarding the status of the Audi and Porsche SUVs, the police said.

During interrogation, it was found that Walia, a college drop-out, had met Reddy in July, 2011 when the businessman was trying to import a luxury car.

After Reddy bought two Audi cars, Walia had taken his two cars on the pretext of selling them and importing a new Porche car. He sold these cars to a Mumbai dealer but did not give the amount to the complainant, the police said.

"Efforts are being made to recover the two Audi Cars," Tyagi said.

Walia has also been arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and had spent about one month in jail, police said.
