New Delhi:

They may not have a vote now but children who accompanied their parents to polling booths today too were an excited lot with many inquisitive ones firing queries at the elders who exercised their franchise.

While children were keen to know about the functioning of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), parents said they wanted them to understand the nuances of electoral system and get a feel of how the democratic process functions.

"I have read in school books about parliament and elections and I know we have to vote to make someone our chief minister or prime minister but I have never seen the place before where voting is held," said eight-year-old Saransha who accompanied her grandfather to a polling booth in Dwaraka.

Four-year-old Riibhu said, "Mumma pressed a button and there was light in it. I clapped on seeing the glowing bulb."

Another four-year-old boy Satwik said, "My mom and dad have come to vote. I want to vote too but papa told me when I grow big he will let me do it then."

Satwik's father Sukalp Sharma, said, "Our kids will be the next generation of voters and it is very important to explain to them the importance of voting so they can do it responsibly."

Few of the model polling stations also had a separate kids zone to entertain the kids as their parents went inside to cast their vote.

Shubhra Srivastava, a mother of 5-year-old twin girls, said, "They have been asking me since the time they have been watching the advertisements on TV given by various political parties that when I am going to vote. I told them that when I go, I will take you along."

Priyanshi, a doctor, said, "My nephew was keen to get a picture clicked with my inked finger. I also made him read all the instructions written outside the polling booth."
