New Delhi: The BJP appointed Satish Upadhyay, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, as its Delhi State President today.

Mr Upadhyay was being seen as the front runner to replace Dr Harsh Vardhan, who won the Lok Sabha elections from Chandni Chowk and is currently the Union Health Minister.

The announcement comes as many within the BJP are gearing up for a possible election in the coming months.

The BJP won 31 seats in the Assembly elections held in December 2013 to emerge as the single largest party in the House of 70 members but did not stake claim to form the government. The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, that won 28 seats, took the support of the Congress and a few Independent MLAs to form the government. However, after 49 days, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal quit.

Following his exit, Delhi has been under the President's Rule, governed through Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
