AIIMS mourns death of medical student who committed suicide
New Delhi: A day after a student allegedly committed suicide as he was disturbed over his academic performance, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Monday mourned his death and said student welfare would be strengthened.

"Students welfare will be further strengthened through participative interaction with the student community of the institute," an AIIMS press release said.

Anil Meena, 22, from Baran district in Rajasthan, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room Sunday at AIIMS in south Delhi. No suicide note was recovered.

"Meena was a very hard working student. The AIIMS family mourns the loss of valuable life of a promising young medico and deeply regrets the tragic death of a student," the press release said.

According to a police officer, Meena, a farmer's son, had been pursuing MBBS at AIIMS and had failed in the first year exam as well as the internal examination.

"He also had problems in following lectures in English," said the police official.

The release said: "The director, faculty, administration and students will work together to ensure that students of the institute are mentored and supported continuously through close interaction."

The release said the victim had no mental or psychiatric illness.
