3-Year-Old Girl Falls Into A Drain In Delhi

New Delhi: A three-year-old girl fell in a drain in southeast Delhi's Sriniwaspuri area today.

Till late evening, the rescue teams couldn't find the girl.

The girl, identified as Kiran, fell in the drain this afternoon when she was playing with her five-year-old brother Sawan. When she was running around, she fell in the drain as a portion of the slab which was covering the drain was broken from the edge, police said.

After her brother raised an alarm, their mother also jumped inside but due to the flow of water, Kiran couldn't be found.

"A call was received today at 12.20 pm about a girl Kiran falling in a drain in Sriniwaspuri. A firetender was rushed to the spot but even till late evening, there was no trace of the girl's body," said an officer from Delhi Fire Services.

Fire tender, emergency response vehicles, divers, local police were pressed into service but the girl could not be found till late evening.

The girl's family alleged that there were many complaints made to the concerned department about the open drain and how it posed a danger but nobody took any action.

Kiran's mother lives in Rajasthan but owing to some marital issues with her husband, she had been staying at her mother's place in Sriniwaspuri.

The drain falls under the jurisidiction of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

"It's an unfortunate incident. Police is investigating the matter and if any employee of SDMC is found to be at fault, action will be taken against him," said South Delhi Municipal Corporation official Mukesh Yadav.
