New Zealand shock England to win bronze in hockey
New Delhi: New Zealand bagged the Commonwealth Games men's field hockey bronze after upsetting world number four England 5-3 on penalties on Thursday.

Shea McAleese scored the winner while Adam Dixon missed his effort after the game was forced into the tie-breaker following a 3-3 deadlock at the end of extra-time in a fiercely-contested game at the Major Dhyan Chand stadium.

Ace forward Simon Mantell scored all the three goals for England.

New Zealand, silver medalists at the 2002 Manchester Games, dominated their fancied rivals in the first-half with their incisive penetrations and smart interceptions.

The Black Sticks took the lead in the 8th minute after earning a penalty stroke which was converted by full-back Dean Couzins. England goal-keeper James Fair misjudged the shot which zoomed past him to hit the right corner of the box.

New Zealand centre-half Nick Haig made it 2-0 seven minutes later by slamming in a spectacular field goal from the right of the circle.

England pulled one back in the 25th minute with Mantell scoring through a reverse flick from the corner of the post.

But England's efforts to force the leveller were twice foiled by an alert Kiwi keeper Kyle Pontifex.

Hayden Shaw converted New Zealand's second penalty stroke of the match despite a valiant effort by Fair who dived to his right but failed to stop the ball from hitting the top of the net.

A yellow card to Kiwi mid-fielder Steve Edwards for elbowing rival captain Barry Middleton in the 53rd minute turned the game England way as they scored two goals in the space of four minutes to level the scores.

Mantell converted a penalty corner in the 57th and scooped one in from close in the 61st to tie the scores 3-3 and take the game into tie-breaker.
