North India floods: Veggie prices soar

New Delhi, Bhopal: Floods in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have hit vegetable supplies hard in North India. Prices have doubled, even tripled in some places over the last week.

"There is no difference in the wholesale and retail prices," said Kusum Sharma, Housewife, New Delhi.

While another housewife from Bhopal Sangeeta Mandle said, "Lady's finger was Rs 20 a kilo. It has become Rs 60 a kilo today. Cauliflower was Rs 15 a kilo, today it stands at Rs 30. Tomatoes are too costly to even talk about."

For the moment, this is how it looks:

VEGETABLE         LAST WEEK         THIS WEEK

Cauliflower         Rs. 30                    Rs. 80

Tomatoes            Rs. 50                    Rs. 60

Peas
                     Rs. 30                    Rs. 50

Lady's Finger      Rs. 20                    Rs. 60

String Beans       Rs. 15                    Rs. 28

"The prices take a few days to stabilize," said Mahmmoud Salim, wholesaler.

An irony that rains, that usually bring relief, have scorched up prices further.
