New rules for plus-size commuters on cycle rickshaws

Aligarh: If you're carrying a little holiday weight, you'll need to carry it on your own in Aligarh.

A new rule in this town in Uttar Pradesh bans the plus-sizes from taking cycle rickshaws.

The unusual decision was delivered a few days ago by a District Magistrate who saw a rickshaw puller struggling to cart a heavy client up a steep flyover.

"I thought this was inhuman," says K Ravindra Nayak.  "For now we are also spreading an awareness campaign to educate people that they should get off when the rickshaw goes uphill or the climb is steep."

So from the first day of the new year, if a policeman spots a large client sitting in a cycle rickshaw while the driver struggles, a fine between Rs 100 to 500 will be imposed.

The plan hasn't been entirely fleshed out. How large is too large, for example, remains an unanswered question, and not just because it's politically incorrect. What happens if a group of people get into the same rickshaw, tipping the scale, is another.

"It's so tough...when I'm going uphill, it feels like I'm going to collapse. And passengers don't pay more for those journeys," says Taslimuddin, a rickshaw puller, a rather skinny man who is in his early fifties.

So if you're a size zero in Aligarh, hop on.  Everyone else - take a hike.
