Kashmir Valley reels under cold wave

Srinagar: Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley witnessed the coldest night of the winter season as the mercury in most parts of the Valley plunged below the freezing point with Pahalgam health resort in south Kashmir recording the minimum temperature of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, a MET official said.

In Srinagar city the minimum temperature slipped from minus 0.6 to minus 1.4 degrees Celsius last night, making it the coldest night of this winter season so far, the official said.

Famous winter sport destination Gulmarg was the second coldest  place in the Valley after Pahalgam, recording a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius.

Kupwara in north Kashmir and Qazigund in south recorded a night temperature of minus 2.1 and minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, the official said.

However, Kokernag in south Kashmir district of Anantnag was the only place where the night temperature stayed above the freezing point at 0.9 degrees Celsius, he added.

The official said the night temperatures in the Valley for this time of the year were normal, but the day temperature in Kashmir division remained three to four degrees above normal.

Srinagar city recorded a maximum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius yesterday, which is four degrees above normal, he said.
