Jaipur: 85% residents do not register domestic helps

Jaipur: In less than six months of his employment, Rajesh, a Nepali resident, who worked as a domestic help with businessman Suresh Dangayach, decamped with `1 crore in cash and jewellery from his employer's house. Like most previous instances of thievery by domestic servants, Rajesh's employers did not seek police verification of their hired help and paid dearly for their mistake.

According to police records, this is the eighth incident in two years where a domestic help ended up looting his employers in Jaipur. Police say that 85% of those living in posh colonies of the city avoid verification of the identities of their maids and domestic helps.

Police say that most people refrain from approaching the police because they employ minors at work. The other reason is the casual approach towards hiring a rank outsider for household work.
Inspector-General of Police, Jaipur Range-1, BL Soni, said, "Many people employ minors as their maids or help; the remaining consider it useless to come to the police for verifying their servant's identity." This ignorance has added to the cases of thefts, burglary and loot in city, he said.

Since, people are not forthcoming in this matter, the city police have decided to launch a campaign. "After Sunday's incident we have decided to start a campaign to get maids and domestic help verified in different colonies," Soni told DNA.

Most of the cases of domestic help looting their owners have taken place in posh colonies like Malviya Nagar, Jawahwar Nagar, Aadarsh Nagar and C-Scheme. The police have also floated a policy proposal where it would be mandatory for residents to take initiatives to protect their property failing which the police can take action against them in the event of an incident. The police have already directed members of the community liasioning group (CLG) in city to spread awareness for verification of domestic help and maids. SP (East), Hawa Singh Ghumeria said that people have been warned in advance several times but they do not take it seriously.
