Ex-kabaddi player killed in road accident

Mumbai: Former state-level kabaddi player Sanjeevani Gavankar, 54, and two others died in an accident in the wee hours of Thursday.

Gavankar was travelling with her husband Harish, 60, and sister-in-law Shubhangi, 61, when their Ford Fiesta hit a road-cleaning vehicle on the Thane-Mumbai highway.

It was around 1.15 am and the BMC vehicle was on the right lane of the highway between Vikroli and Airoli bridge. The car which was going towards Mulund hit it from the rear.

Sanjeevani represented Mumbai University in the All-India Inter-Varsity Championships on four occasions. She was an employee of Bank of Maharashtra, which she represented in various tournaments.

A police wireless patrolling vehicle rushed the three to a private hospital where they were declared dead before admission.

The Vikroli police have arrested the driver of the BMC vehicle. Identified as Harkatullah Khan, the driver had to undergo the alcohol consumption test. It was observed that his vehicle did not have its tail and signal lights working. This could have led to the accident as Harish, who was driving the car, could not see the vehicle.

Severe head injuries may have led to the death of the three people.
