Chhota Rajan Deported From Indonesia: 10 Developments

Chhota Rajan was arrested on October 25 in Indonesia's Bali

New Delhi: One of India's most wanted men, Chhota Rajan, has been deported from Indonesia and will be brought to Delhi tomorrow morning. He was arrested last week after a two-decade-long international manhunt. Ahead of his return, the Maharashtra government said all the cases against him have been transferred to the CBI.

Here are 10 developments in the story:

  1. A special plane was sent by India to fly back  Chhota Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Nikalje.

  2. "Chhota Rajan will be deported tonight as the weather is clear," Yanuri Insan, a senior Interpol officer in Jakarta, told news agency ANI earlier today.

  3. The officer had added that the 55-year-old will be provided with special escort to the airport in Bali in a bullet-proof car.

  4. Rajan's return had been delayed as a volcanic eruption near Bali had disrupted flights and forced the airport to shut down.

  5. Rajan had been living incognito in Australia, but fearing his enemies would find him, was able to fly to Bali where he was arrested without resistance, according to news reports.

  6. Rajan is wanted for over 70 cases of murder, extortion and drug trafficking in Mumbai.

  7. All those cases have been transferred to the CBI, which means Rajan will be taken to Delhi and not Mumbai.

  8. Rajan has reportedly conveyed to Indian officials his reluctance to go to Mumbai because of threats from underworld don and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, his former boss turned enemy.

  9. Rajan had told reporters that "some in the Mumbai police" have links with Dawood Ibrahim. "The Mumbai Police has done a lot of 'atyachar' (atrocities) on me...the government should look into that. Some in the Mumbai Police are mixed up with Dawood," he had said.

  10. Rajan and Dawood were close aides until they fell out after the 1993 Mumbai blasts, which Dawood was accused of masterminding. There have been several attempts on Rajan's life by Dawood's gang-members.
