A Protest Raises Stink in Bengaluru as Locals Block Garbage Trucks

Garbage trucks stand lined up outside Doddaballapur, as protesting locals block them from entering the garbage treatment plant.

Bengaluru: Bengaluru seems to be staring at a garbage crisis once again. Hundreds of trucks carrying garbage from the city have been stopped before they could reach garbage treatment plants in Dodaballapur.

Much more garbage is being sent than the plants can handle - and the villagers have had enough. They have not allowed the trucks to move since Tuesday afternoon.

One woman, Anasuya, sitting in protest blocking the road to the plant said drinking water was filthy both for humans and animals - as she showed two bottles of dirty water.

Another woman, Bharathi, added that there were so many flies that children found it very difficult.

The administration is asking the villagers for patience - just for a few more months. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Administrator, TM Vijay Bhaskar, told NDTV that more garbage was being sent to the Terra Firma garbage treatment plant than it could handle. He said other plants were coming up in a matter of months and said the villagers would see the difference then. But till late on Wednesday night, the standoff continued.

Caught in the middle of the standoff are the drivers of the garbage trucks. Since Tuesday afternoon, they have been camped along the road to the village, hoping that matters get sorted out soon and they can get rid of their smelly cargo.
