India's two-wheeler sector demonstrated robust performance during the third quarter of fiscal year 2025-26 (October-December 2025), registering total sales of 5,696,000 units nationwide. Uttar Pradesh emerged as the leading market, accounting for 8,62,000 units, which underscores the state's pivotal role in sustaining the industry's growth amid diverse regional dynamics.
As per data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Uttar Pradesh's dominance in a segment characterised by strong penetration in rural and semi-urban areas. The state's expansive population, coupled with expanding road infrastructure and rising disposable incomes, has positioned it ahead of traditional powerhouses.

Maharashtra, often a frontrunner in passenger vehicles with 1,276,000 units sold in the same period, trails in two-wheelers, highlighting the distinct demand patterns between vehicle categories.
In the quarterly sales report, the Western Zone topped all regions with 19.06 lakh units sold, benefiting from the combined demand of Maharashtra and Gujarat, which together contribute to nearly 20 per cent of the nation's two-wheeler market. The zone's success is indicative of strong urban demand in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Ahmedabad, along with significant rural consumption in their surrounding areas.

The quarterly figures align with broader trends in India's automotive landscape. Two-wheelers continue to serve as the primary mode of personal mobility, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities where affordability and versatility prevail. Uttar Pradesh's contribution, approximately 15 per cent of national sales, signals sustained momentum, even as manufacturers navigate supply chain challenges and shifting consumer preferences toward electric variants.
India has maintained its position as the largest two-wheeler market in the world by volume for several years. This segment includes motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds, and it plays a crucial role in personal mobility for a large portion of the population, especially in rural regions, small towns, and urban areas where road infrastructure and public transport options are limited. Two-wheelers are also extensively utilised for last-mile deliveries and small business activities, contributing to their commercial appeal.
