NHAI Scraps FASTag KYV From Today; Here's Why

NHAI ends KYV for FASTags from February 1, streamlining issuance as banks verify details, easing toll hassles for motorists.

NHAI Scraps FASTag KYV From Today; Here's Why

In a significant reform aimed at reducing travel-related hassles for motorists, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a major simplification in the FASTag issuance process. Effective February 1, 2026 (today), the requirement of Know Your Vehicle (KYV) has been discontinued for new FASTag issuances in the Car/Jeep/Van category. This move is expected to streamline the process for millions of road users who rely on FASTag for seamless toll payments across India's national highways.

Under the revised framework, banks will now take full responsibility for verifying vehicle details at the time of activation. This eliminates the need for additional post-issuance KYV checks, which had previously caused delays and inconvenience for vehicle owners despite their submission of valid documents. By shifting the verification responsibility to banks, NHAI aims to make FASTag issuance faster, more efficient, and user-friendly.

An official government release highlighted the impact of this reform, stating: "This reform will bring significant relief to lakhs of common road users who were facing inconvenience and delays after FASTag activation due to post-issuance KYV requirements, despite having valid vehicle documents."

The relaxation is not limited to new FASTags alone. For existing FASTags already issued to cars, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement. Instead, verification will be mandated only in specific cases where complaints are raised. These include issues such as loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or suspected misuse. In the absence of such complaints, motorists will not be required to undergo KYV again, thereby reducing unnecessary procedural burdens.

This decision comes after years of feedback from road users who had expressed frustration over delays caused by post-issuance verification. Many motorists reported that even after their FASTags were activated, they faced hurdles due to KYV requirements, which often led to refunds being stuck or delayed. By removing this step, NHAI has addressed a long-standing concern and demonstrated its commitment to improving the travel experience for citizens.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has emphasized that the reform is designed to benefit lakhs of motorists nationwide, ensuring smoother toll transactions and reducing administrative bottlenecks. With banks now directly accountable for vehicle verification, the FASTag ecosystem is expected to become more reliable and efficient.
