Mahindra Trumps Hyundai Once Again In Domestic Sales For May'26

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M Ltd.), one of India's leading automotive companies, has been rubbing shoulders with Hyundai, which once held the position of second-largest carmaker in the country for a long duration. The Indian OEM has today announced its overall auto sales for the month of May 2026 stood at 99,636 vehicles, a growth of 20%, including exports. This figure comprises sales of commercial vehicles and three-wheelers. Talking of the meat of the matter - company's domestic car sales stood at 58,021 units. The automaker also reports an uptick of 11 per cent for its car sales on a YoY basis.

On the contrary, Hyundai wholesaled a total of 47,837 units in the domestic market. Simply putting it together, Mahindra has taken a lead with a high margin, if anything. Exports, however, remain low for the homegrown automaker with just 1,552 cars. Hyundai shipped 13,300 units in the month of May.

Talking of Mahindra's Indian line-up, it comprises largely of models with a starting price of over Rs 10 lakh, namely Thar, Thar Roxx, XUV 7XO, Scorpio-N, BE 6, and XEV 9E. For the last few months, Scorpio and Thar have remained the best-selling models of the brand. Also, Mahindra's sales have been increasing continuously on a MoM basis, but Hyundai is losing its market share to Indian brands - Tata and Mahindra.

Besides, in the Utility Vehicles segment, Mahindra sold 58,021 vehicles in the domestic market, a growth of 11%, and overall, 59,573 vehicles, including exports. The domestic sales for Commercial Vehicles stood at 24,079, a growth of 19%.

According to Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., "In May, we achieved SUV sales of 58,021 units, a growth of 11%, and total vehicle sales stood at 99,636, a 20% YoY growth. The sustained demand across our portfolio continues, constrained by supply chain challenges due to manpower shortages at select suppliers."
