Driving Tips

On Friday night, a thick fog blanketed several northern states, bringing visibility down to near zero across Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and surrounding regions. The situation worsened as pollution levels spiked, creating a dense smog. According to CPCB data, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 456 at 6 am, marking the season's second-worst reading. By Sunday, the AQI climbed to 461, recording another severe day for air quality. In such challenging conditions, here are practical driving tips to help ensure safer journeys during foggy weather.

Maintain A Safe Gap

When fog rolls in, it becomes tricky to judge how far other vehicles really are. That's why it's smart to keep extra space between your car and the one ahead. This practice gives you more time to react if the driver ahead suddenly brakes or switches lanes. In low visibility, sudden moves can quickly turn dangerous, often leading to pile-ups. By simply maintaining a safe gap, you protect yourself and make the road safer for everyone around you.

Maintain Your Lane

When fog sets in, lane discipline becomes crucial. Avoid unnecessary overtaking or weaving between lanes, as reduced visibility can hide approaching vehicles. Stick to your lane markings and drive at a steady pace. Using road reflectors or painted dividers as guides can help you stay aligned. By maintaining your lane, you reduce confusion for other drivers and minimize the risk of side collisions. Consistency in lane positioning is key to safe navigation during dense fog.

Avoid Hazard Light Usage

Hazard lights are meant for emergencies, not continuous driving. Overusing them in fog can confuse other drivers, making them unsure of your intentions. Instead, rely on fog lights or low beams to signal your presence. Use hazard lights only when your vehicle is stationary or facing a breakdown. Responsible use ensures clarity on the road, prevents miscommunication, and helps maintain smooth traffic flow even in low-visibility conditions.

Use Fog Lights

Fog lights are designed to cut through mist and improve visibility close to the ground. Always switch to fog lights or low beams instead of high beams, as the latter reflect off fog particles and worsen visibility. Proper lighting not only helps you see better but also ensures other drivers can spot your vehicle. This simple adjustment significantly reduces risks, making your journey safer and more controlled in challenging weather conditions.

Keep Glass Surfaces Clear

Fog often causes windscreens and windows to mist or frost, further reducing visibility. Regularly wipe them with a microfiber cloth or towel to maintain a clear view. Using the defogger or air-conditioning system can also help prevent condensation inside the cabin. Clean glass surfaces ensure you can spot road signs, vehicles, and pedestrians without obstruction. A clear windshield is essential for safe driving, especially when external visibility is already compromised by dense fog.
