Although Jimny Flopped, More Carmakers Are Reading Sub-4m Lifestyle SUVs

The arrival of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny has opened doors for more lifestyle SUVs under the 4-meter length mark. However, the new ones will be more urban-friendly than just hardcore off-roaders.

When Maruti Suzuki introduced the five-door Jimny in India in 2023, it was expected to expand the niche lifestyle SUV space beyond the Mahindra Thar. The idea was simple: bring a globally loved off-roader to Indian buyers who wanted something adventurous yet practical. However, the reality has been quite different. While the Jimny has struggled to find consistent demand domestically, its arrival has actually sparked interest among other carmakers to explore sub-4 metre lifestyle SUVs.

Jimny's Mixed Sales Story In India

On paper, the Jimny looked like a promising product. It came with a strong off-road pedigree, compact proportions, and the kind of rugged appeal enthusiasts appreciate. Yet sales numbers have been modest in India. In some months, the SUV has sold only a few hundred units, and in January 2024, sales dropped to just 163 units.

Interestingly, the Jimny has done far better in export markets. Within two years of launch, the SUV crossed 1 lakh total dispatches, but a large portion of those were exports rather than domestic sales.

This suggests the Jimny is not necessarily a weak product. Instead, it appears to be a vehicle better suited to specific global markets where compact off-roaders are more widely accepted.

Mahindra Thar Shows The Segment Potential

While the Jimny has struggled, the Mahindra Thar tells a completely different story. The lifestyle SUV has consistently sold several thousand units every month, thanks to strong brand recall and the introduction of the rear-wheel-drive diesel variants, which brought the price down and made the Thar more accessible. In comparison months, Mahindra has sold over 6,000 units of the Thar, far ahead of the Jimny's numbers.

This contrast highlights an important point: the lifestyle SUV space does exist in India, but the formula needs to be right.

Mahindra Vision S To Take This Niche Forward

Mahindra appears ready to build further on this trend. The Vision S concept previews a compact lifestyle SUV that could sit below the Thar in the brand's lineup. Expected to launch in the sub-4 metre category, it features a boxy stance, upright proportions, and rugged styling cues such as squared wheel arches and skid plates.

Positioned as a more accessible off-road-inspired SUV, the Vision S could target buyers who want the adventurous image of the Thar but in a smaller and potentially more affordable package.

Renault Bridger To Enhance Competition

Another interesting entrant is the Renault Bridger, which is being developed as a compact SUV for India and global markets. The Bridger concept also follows the same rugged design philosophy, with a boxy shape, flat roofline, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

Renault has indicated that the model will form part of its upcoming India strategy, with production commencing next year onward.

The Bigger Picture

In hindsight, the Jimny may not have cracked the Indian market the way many expected. Yet it has helped validate a new niche. As brands like Mahindra and Renault begin exploring sub-4 metre lifestyle SUVs, it is clear that the segment is only getting started.

For buyers, this means more choice in the coming years. For manufacturers, it is a reminder that even a modest-selling product can spark a much larger trend.
