Cracks in Trinamool alliance?

Kolkata: Despite having an electoral alliance, Left opposition Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) today ruled out joining the government if ally Trinamool Congress won the West Bengal Assembly elections.

"Despite our differences with the Trinamool Congress we are supporting it only to defeat the CPI(M). We have no intention of joining the government if Trinamool comes to power," SUCI General Secretary Provas Ghosh told reporters.

He said Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee would not invite his party in case of government formation.

"Had it been so she would not have declared candidates for all seats without giving us any seat except the two we are holding now," Ghosh said.

"We had three meetings with Trinamool on seat adjustment. But without letting us know, the Trinamool leadership announced a list for all seats," SUCI leader said.

SUCI had extended full support to the Trinamool's movement in Singur and Nandigram, Ghosh said, adding, "Till the last Lok Sabha election we had good coordination with the Trinamool. But differences emerged afterwards."

Ghosh said the party was contesting in 30 seats and expressed confidence about retaining both Joynagar and Kultali seats in South 24-Parganas district even though Congress candidates were in the fray in both.

He described Congress and BJP at the Centre and the CPI(M) in the state as 'the people's enemy'. "Even though Congress has allied with the Trinamool, we have no alliance with the Congress and we are fighting against each other," he said.

To a question whether Trinamool would deliver better governance, Ghosh said, "I don't think there will be absolute change if the Trinamool comes to power, but definitely there will be an improvement from the 35-years of misrule by the CPI(M)."
