15-year-old girl set on fire after rape attempt near Allahabad

Allahabad: A 15-year-old girl from Shankargarh, about 50 kilometres from Allahabad, was allegedly set on fire after she resisted a rape attempt on Sunday. The man who tried to rape her ran after she sounded an alarm; his parents later doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze in an attempt to silence her, according to the police.

The minor has been admitted to an Allahabad hospital with 80 per cent burns, and is reportedly battling for life.

According to Arun Kumar Pandey, Superintendent of Police, Crime, Allahabad, the girl has said in her statement that her neighbor tried to rape her after entering her house while her parents were away. When she resisted, he fled. His parents then came by and set her on fire.

"The victim's sister told us that she saw the accused leaving their house with his parents," Mr Pandey added.

Attempt to murder cases have been registered against the accused. While the parents have been arrested, the man is on the run. Police say they have constituted teams to track him down.

Dr R J Siddiqui, a burns specialist and plastic surgeon treating the girl, said, "She is quite critical, we are giving her the best care. She is conscious and is responding to commands. If her condition worsens, we will take a decision whether to refer her to a hospital in Lucknow or Delhi. For now, we have everything that is needed for her treatment."

Just two days ago, a girl in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh was burnt in the same manner. She later succumbed to her injuries.
