Ahmedabad to be a dog-free city in 10 years

Ahmedabad: Following the dog census report, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation plans to intensify its animal birth control programme.

However, it will take around 10 years to ensure that the city is rid of dog menace, believes municipal commissioner IP Gautam.

The civic body will invite all agencies registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) or local non-government organisations, which plan to get themselves registered with AWBI, for help with the programme.

The civic body will approach the agencies in a fortnight and will simultaneously start the animal birth control programme in different areas of the city.

"There are five to six agencies registered with AWBI and we will contact them for animal birth control and carry out around 60 days of intensive drive," said Gautam.

The civic body will also use all options available to control the canine population and dog bite cases in the city. Gautam said that the dog population may get stagnant within a couple of years, but it may take around 10 years to ensure that the city is rid of dogs.

Giving reasons for this estimation, he said that it is because of the wide gap between the birth and death ratio of dogs.

Meanwhile, the civic body will intensify sanitation programme in the city. The dog census report of Humane Society International (HSI) said that the highest concentration of dogs was found near garbage disposal areas, in the lower and middle income group housing societies.

The civic body will streamline its system for solid waste management by Dec 15 and then will carry out awareness campaign in the city with regards to sanitation.
