Bishkek:
A crowd of thousands gathered at a funeral ceremony on Saturday to bury some of the Kyrgyz protesters shot dead by police during Wednesday's opposition rally in the capital Bishkek.
At least 76 people died in the violence and more than 1,400 were injured, the Health Ministry reported on Friday.
The mass funeral took place on the outskirts of the capital, where mourners carried coffins draped in Kyrgyzstan's national flag and held photographs of the victims of the violence in Bishkek's Ala-Too Square, where protesters were fired on as some stormed the main government building.
Deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has since fled the capital to seek support in his clan's southern power base.
Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the opposition's self-declared interim government, said Bakiyev would be guaranteed safe passage out of the country if he were to resign, but that the interim government refused to negotiate with him.
Otunbayeva addressed the funeral ceremony on Saturday, saying "brave Kyrgyz men died for the revolution, we are so sorry."
Bakiyev was in the southern Jalal-Abad region, his political stronghold, which has raised concerns he might try to secure his survival by exploiting the split between the more urban north and rural south.
A small ceremony to mourn those killed in Bishkek was held in Jalal-Abad on Saturday morning.
Some people at the gathering defended Bakiyev, with one woman praising him for improving people's pensions, as well as education and transport.
Since coming to power in 2005 amid street protests known as the Tulip Revolution, Bakiyev had ensured a measure of stability.
But the opposition said it came at the expense of democratic standards and accused Bakiyev of enriching himself and his family, just like Askar Akayev, the ruler he overthrew.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sent a special envoy to Kyrgyzstan to meet "constitutional authorities and representatives of relevant political groups," UN associate spokesman Farhan Haq said on Friday.
