Cars washed away in flooded creek caught on camera

Cars washed away in flooded creek caught on camera
This is certainly not languid afternoon entertainment, though the pace of the video is slow and easy, almost lyrically so.

For some time, in fact, as you begin watching you could be lulled into thinking you shall just watch a voluptuous muddy creek flowing between lanes where cars are parked.

And then, you see the creek turn lethal. One and then two and then many cars swim by like so many toys thrown into water by a bored five-year-old. The moment when it begins, at a little over 1 minute on the video, is quite dramatic.

There they go, cars selectively swallowed by the swirling water and then tossed casually around. This is an amateur video posted on YouTube, shot from a second floor office in the Queensland City of Toowoomba in Australia, which was hit by a Tsunami-like wall of water yesterday. The flash flood, brought on by a freak storm, has killed at least 10 people in the state's Lockyer Valley. And left the valley devastated, with entire houses ripped from the foundation.
On that video below, do catch too, the one that got away. There is footage of a man who braves the torrential rain as well as the swelling creek that is devouring the tons of metal. And there he is, a tiny figure with an umbrella, intent on saving his car. And he does drive it away. Fearless? Foolish? In love - with his car?

At the end of the video comes the heartbreaking denouement. When the once shiny cars are deposited, battered, dented, barely recognisable in ungainly heaps by the powerful, insouciant water. No extravagant film maker could have managed the shock-value that nature does here.

Catch it:

A day after the freak floods many people are reported missing in the Valley and news agencies say military helicopters are searching for them. There is more flooding expected and the Brisbane River has overflowed its banks. Heavy rain has continued through Tuesday.

A news video from yesterday showed houses submerged to the roof line in raging muddy waters, with people clambering on top. People sat on the top of their cars and clung to trees as water swirled around them. Watch.
