Cabinet note on Telangana awaiting political nod

New Delhi: The Home Ministry has prepared the note for creation of Telangana state and it will be presented before the Union Cabinet once Congress President Sonia Gandhi returns from the US and it gets a "political clearance", senior officials said today.

Following a directive from Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Ministry officials prepared the Cabinet note for the creation of the new state, to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh, as per the constitutional provisions.

"We are ready with the Cabinet note but waiting for the political clearance," a senior official said, indicating that the approval is expected only after the return of the Congress chief from the US.

Mrs Gandhi left for the US on September 2 for a medical check-up and is expected to return in about a week.

The Home Ministry will send the note to the Law Ministry for vetting only after getting the clearance.

Yesterday, Mr Shinde had said his ministry was preparing the note to be presented before the Union Cabinet for creation of a separate Telangana and it will be brought soon.

The Congress Working Committee had taken a decision on Telangana and asked the government to prepare a resolution.

"One process has been completed. Now, it has come to the government and the second stage has started. It will come soon," he said.

On Tuesday, Mr Shinde had said that a note for initiating the process of carving out Telangana would be presented before the Union Cabinet in the next 20 days.

An AICC committee headed by senior leader and Defence Minister AK Antony and comprising M Veerappa Moily and Ahmed Patel is hearing concerns of all stakeholders in the wake of the Congress Working Committee decision to carve out a separate Telangana.
