Slab of monorail collapses in suburban Mumbai, 2 killed

Mumbai: Two people were killed after a slab of Monorail collapsed in the suburban Chembur area in Mumbai today.

The incident occurred at around 5.30 pm - 6 pm when the girder of the monorail bridge collapsed.

Four people were also injured in the mishap. They have been admitted to Rajawadi hospital.

"The support beam used in the construction of the bridge collapsed this evening, leaving four persons injured," a fire brigade official said.

The monorail, under construction, is eventually meant to stretch over nearly 20 kilometres, connecting Jacob Circle to Chembur via Wadala. Construction was meant to be completed by November but is running behind schedule. Once complete, it will be the second largest monorail section after Japan's Osaka corridor which is 23.8-km-long.
