Robber, rapist, matricide arrested by Mumbai police
Mumbai: A matricidal rapist known for stealing from God, and his accomplice, were picked up by the Kandivli police.

The notorious robbers, identified as Chandrakant Pawar (23) and his brother-in-law Samir Khan (30), had fled to the city from Solapur after killing Pawar's step mother earlier this month.

The woman had allegedly taught the duo the tricks of the trade and had paid with her life for asking for her share of their booty.

According to PSI LG Shinde from the Kandivli police, they received a tip-off about a wanted robber who was roaming around Kandivli station.

"We reached there and arrested Khan, who later told us that his brother-in-law, Pawar, was also in Mumbai. Pawar, who is one of the most wanted robbers in the state, was then arrested from Nalasopara," said Inspector Shinde.

The police arrested the duo as suspects in a number of idol robbery cases in Mumbai, especially in the western suburbs, where a gang of seven had struck at a temple in Borivli last year, killing a guard, injuring his colleague and looting seven idols and 17 silver items.

"Since Pawar is infamous for idol robbery, we suspect that he may have also been part of the gang," said Inspector Shinde.

After the arrest, when the Kandivli police sought information on the duo from their counterparts in Solapur, they learnt that Pawar and Khan were absconding after killing Pawar's step mother, Aruna, over money issues.

The police officers investigating the case also said that, at the time of the murder, Pawar was out on bail in a May robbery and rape case and was known for raping the women belonging to the houses that he robbed.

"Pawar has more than 10 cases of robbery against him, for which he is wanted in Solapur and Mumbai. The accused were presented before the court and have been remanded to police custody till July 28," Inspector Shinde said.
