Mumbai:
A traffic cop had to pay dearly for stopping a duo from jumping a signal at the Nariman Point junction near Air India building.
39-year-old Anil Shankar Ahvad sustained a collar bone fracture and severe abrasions on his left leg and was rushed to the nearby GT hospital.
Confirming the incident, officials from Marine Drive police station said that Ahvad was knocked down by a bike on Sunday around 5:30 pm while attempting to stop the bikers for jumping a signal.
"The traffic cop was brought to the hospital as he suffered a fracture of the left collar bone after being hit by a motorcycle. We have sent him home but he has to come for regular follow-ups and will require rest for a month at least," said Dr A P Chaudhari, medical superintendent of GT hospital.
"We have registered a case under the motor vehicle act against an unidentified person. We have also taken the account of eyewitnesses of the incident," said Assistant Police Inspector M N Patil.
The police are also investigating whether the incident was an accident or a deliberate attempt by the biker to injure the cop on duty.
Narrating the incident a police official said, "As the duo on black pulsar jumped the signal, Ahvad tried to stop them on their way towards Nariman Point but they sped away. As they took a U-turn, Ahvad crossed the road and went to stop them on the northbound road. But instead of stopping, the duo knocked the officer down."
Expressing concern over increasing cases of on-duty traffic cops getting injured, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Brijesh Singh said, "We are concerned about such accidents which are caused by errant drivers. We are seriously thinking of adopting some safety techniques. At times, people who try to escape, also accidentally or intentionally injure the traffic police."
