8 Schoolchildren Dead, 9 Others Injured In Karnataka Accident

Udupi: Eight schoolchildren, including six boys and two girls, were killed in Karnataka's Udupi district today when their school van collided with a bus.

The incident happened at the at Trasi village around 400 km from Bengaluru around 8:15 am.

Early reports said that 16 children, between the ages of seven and 13, were on their way to the Don Bosco School in Kundapur in an Omni van when a private bus rammed into it.

The van had stopped at an intersection just a few metres from the school when the speeding bus ran into it form behind, completely crushing a part of the vehicle.

Eight children were killed on the spot, police said.

The others, including the driver, are being treated at a hospital in Manipal, senior police officer Annamalai told NDTV. "One child is critical. The other seven kids and the van driver are out of danger," he said.

The driver of the bus that collided with the van has been arrested.
