PM Narendra Modi has also gifted PM Cameron David Omissi's book 'Indian Voices of the Great War'.

London: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today gifted British Prime Minister David Cameron a specially handcrafted pair of bookends made of wood, marble and silver.

The centerpiece of each of these bookends, the PM's office said, was a silver bell and tidings, which have a verse from the Bhagavad Gita engraved in Sanskrit, along with its English meaning along the inside rim.

"Taken from Chapter 13 of Bhagavad Gita, these verses (15-16) describe the ultimate underlying reality. Each bell has one verse etched on it," the PM's Office posted on Twitter.

PM Modi, who stayed overnight at Chequers, Mr Cameron's country retreat in Buckinghamshire, also gifted him David Omissi's book 'Indian Voices of the Great War'. The book is a compilation of letters sent by Indian soldiers during the World War I when they served in France.

He gifted the First Lady an Aranmula metal mirror, a unique handicraft from Kerala, and some pashmina stoles.

In pictures released by the PM's Office, the two leaders were seen walking down the sprawling lawns of the 16th century mansion left to the nation by the owners almost 100 years ago. PM Modi also planted a sapling.

Mr Modi is not the first Indian PM to visit Chequers but is the first to stay there. In 1971, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had gone to Chequers to visit her British counterpart Edward Heath and discuss the volatile situation in Bangladesh that year.

Later today, the prime minister will attend a roundtable of UK CEOs and then head to Buckingham Palace for lunch with Queen Elizabeth, an honour that is reserved for visiting heads of state.

Hours later, he will address some 60,000 members of the Indian community at Wembley Stadium in what is flagged as the centerpiece of his three-day UK visit.
