Trinamool Congress claims police beat up Mamata's uncle
Suri (West Bengal): Trinamool Congress workers have alleged that police attacked party chief Mamata Banerjee's uncle after the party won a school body election in West Bengal's Birbhum district.

However, denying the allegation, police said the party workers attacked policemen and detained them inside the school complex.

Trinamool Congress MLA Ashish Banerjee claimed that in retaliation to party workers' attack on police for resorting to a lathicharge, police went to the home of Banerjee's uncle Anil Mukherjee on Sunday night and beat him up with lathis.

Subdivisional Police Officer Sumanta Hira denied the allegation.

He said there was tension throughout the day on Sunday at the election for six seats at the Guardian's Committee at the High School at Kusumba.

There were scuffles prior to the election which was contested separately by Congress, Trinamool Congress and CPI(M), leading to tension, the SPDO said.

After the Trinamool Congress won all six seats, its workers attacked the police alleging that they had made a lathicharge and detained policemen inside the school, he said, adding, police went to the school at night and freed their personnel.

Trinamool Congress MLA Ashish Banerjee, however, claimed, "Since we won the election without an alliance, the police went to the home of our chief's uncle at night and beat him up with lathis, injuring him."
