Less than a week after a cop in Tamil Nadu was attacked and bled to death while 2 ministers and officials just watched, the state has a new Police Chief. Letika Saran is the country`s second woman DGP and Tamil Nadu's first.
In an exclusive interview to NDTV, she says her priority is to crack the cop's murder and effectively deal with crimes against women and children.
Q. Are you conscious of this distinction of being the state`s first woman DGP?
A. I`m an IPS Officer. So these things happen. That said, it is every police officers dream to occupy this post one day. I`m honoured and now the challenge is to deliver.
Q. What`s your priority as DGP?
A. Crimes against women and children. Every such crime is one too many. I will focus on this in particular.
Q. You take charge at a time when the morale of the police is low. An SI was murdered as people just watched.
A. It`s really bad. I`ve told my officers that this just cannot be allowed to happen again. All I can do now is to ensure that the investigation is expedited and the culprits are brought to book as soon as possible.
