Prime Minister Pays Tribute to Assamese War Hero Lachit Borphukan

PM Modi later addresed Indian community at Singapore Expo.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to 17th century Assamese war hero Lachit Borphukan on his birth anniversary saying he is India's pride and his valour in the battle of Saraighat can never be
forgotten.

"On his birth anniversary, I salute late Lachit Borphukan. He is India's pride and his valour during Saraighat war can never be forgotten," PM Modi tweeted.

Late Lachit Borphukan was a commander in the erstwhile Ahom kingdom and is known for his leadership in the 1671 battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by Mughal forces to capture Assam.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also paid homage to "great warrior and symbol of Northeast region's pride Late Lachit Borphukan".

"With exceptional bravery and leadership skills Lachit Borphukan set example that challenges can be successfully met with patience and wisdom," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted.
