Praise For Indian Diplomat Who Rebuffed Nawaz Sharif At UN

Eenam Gambhir, who responded to Pakistani PM at the UN has become an overnight sensation.

New Delhi: She had us at "Ivy League of terror". Eenam Gambhir, the young diplomat who responded to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the UN's has become an overnight sensation.

While he focussed on Kashmir, the 2005 batch Indian Foreign Services (IFS) officer's words delivered in an understated, calm manner seemed to be right kind of balm that a nation grieving for 18 of its soldiers, needed.

"Pakistan channelizes billions of dollars, much of it diverted from international aid, to training, financing and supporting terrorist groups as militant proxies against its neighbours," Ms Gambhir's sharply-worded but graceful take-down said.

Congratulations poured in from all corners for the University of Geneva graduate who has served as second secretary in Argentina before becoming the first secretary at the UN.

The Indian Administrative Services (IAS) association which is otherwise competitive with the IFS posted:
Columnist Shobha De and former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi were also among those who commended the diplomat for her effective words. A highly-placed official told NDTV the speech was a "team effort", drafted in just five hours, in time for India's reply to Nawaz Sharif's speech. Their objective was simple - to weave in the terrorism theme into the entire narrative.
