Odisha student shot dead in Boston

Boston: A graduate student from Odisha was shot dead in Boston on Thursday, according to reports. The police have so far not classified the murder as racially motivated or as a hate crime.

The name of the victim has been withheld because he has not yet been identified by a family member, as is required by the Boston Police.

According to a report in The Boston Globe, the police found the 24-year-old man, lying on Allston Street at about 2:40 am, with apparent gunshot wounds. The Police said that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting occurred about a mile from the Boston University campus in a residential area just off the busy Commonwealth Avenue.

He was shot in the head and leg, according to The Boston Globe.

"It (the murder) was done by either some mischief mongers or someone who was jealous of him," the victim's father K Sudhakar Rao, who is a regional manager of a rural banking network, told NDTV on Saturday.

The victim was was a BTech graduate from NIT, Karnataka and was doing his MBA in Mathematical Finance in Boston University. In a statement posted on the University website, President Robert A Brown offered condolences to the victim's family and friends.

There has been a series of killings in Boston this week, say reports.
