Maoists kill railway official, blow up train track

Patna: As the 72-hour bandh called by Maoists began on Sunday across four states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal, there were reports of Maoist attacks in Bihar and Orissa-Jharkhand border.

Maoists attacks was carried out late night on Saturday, and paralyzed rail traffic on the Howrah-Delhi route.

Rail traffic has been restored on the route, more than eight hours after Naxals blasted the line.

Twenty trains on the route were rescheduled, and two diverted.

Naxals had also caused damage to the overhead electrical wires on the track, but those were repaired as well.

While Maoists blew up railway tracks near Rajla station on Jhaja-Jasidih section of East Central Railway in Bihar's Jamui district, a railway supervisor was killed in Chandiposh on Orissa-Jharkhand border.

"About 40 Maoist guerrillas blew up the up and down tracks late on Saturday night between Rajla and Narganjo railway halts near Kahba bridge, affecting the movement of several long-distance and local trains," Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) U S Dutt told PTI in Patna.

A stretch of 2.5 feet of up line and five feet of down line was damaged in the blast, railway sources said.

While jawans of GRP, RPF and local police reached the site, Divisional Railway Manager of Asansol D K Gaien also rushed to the spot to oversee the repair work, official sources said.

Several Express trains were stopped and three Express trains were diverted for the disruption caused by blast on the railway tracks.

Chief Public Relations Officer of East Central Railway Dilip Kumar said 2331 Himgiri Express were diverted via Dhanbad-Gaya-Mughalsarai, 2370 Haridwar Express will go via Jamalpur and 2304 Poorva Express will travel to New Delhi via Gaya-Dhanbad route.

The trains which were stranded at various stations include South Bihar Express at Jamui, Punjab Mail at Barh, Bibhuti Express at Fathua, Lalkila Express at Gardanibagh, Upper India Express at Banka Ghat, Chapra-Tata Express at Madanpur, Toofan Mail at Ara, Mithilanchal Express and Danapur-Howrah Express at Jhajha.

Maoists have called the bandh in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh on Sunday to protest the proposed 'Operation Green Hunt' to be launched by Centre against them. (With PTI inputs)
