India's shame: Another honour killing

Julkan village, Patiala:

There are reports of another honour killing in a village near Patiala in Punjab. On Wednesday in Haryana's Jind, a man was beaten to death for marrying a girl against her family's wishes. These murders are clearly marks of India's shame.

It was Kuljit's first visit to her village after marriage. She had come with her husband and mother-in-law not knowing that her father had not forgiven her for marrying against his wishes.

He and a few relatives gathered and tried to kill the boy. Her mother-in-law intervened and was shot instead.

"I want severe punishment for them. They killed my mother. Even I am not safe. Some of them are yet to be arrested. I feel threatened," said Balihar Singh, Kuljit's husband.

"My father should be punished harshly. He has ruined my life. He should be given a life sentence or death," said Kuljit Kaur, Balihar's wife.

The village is divided in what was an attempted honour killing.

"The family should have compromised. There was no need for this. The girl's father couldn't accept their marriage. We tried to calm him down. He didn't listen," said Angresh Singh, villager.

Today in Punjab and Haryana, honour killings have become a big menace. The government needs to tackle it with an iron fist but also need to approach it socially and politically.
