Headley, the Paying Guest, was 'sweet and charming

Mumbai: David Headley stayed in an apartment in south Mumbai's Breach Candy area with an elderly Sindhi couple and has been described as an affable man.

Headley was a paying guest for a year from April 2008 at apartment number 56 at Shyam Niwas housing society, close to the US Consulate in Mumbai.

NDTV spoke to people in the area about Headley's demeanour. Pradip Kanojia, who runs an ironing shop near the apartment block where the Lashkar operative stayed, says Headley was a "sweet and charming man."

Pradip describes Headley as a tall man who seemed like a foreigner because of his accent. "He got me his clothes and I ironed them," he said.

Pradip said he had asked Headley how difficult it would be for him to go to America. Headley, Pradip claims, said he did immigration and he could help him get immigration if he paid up Rs 3 lakhs.

The landlady of the apartment, a Mrs Kriplani, 75, refused comment for the moment, But she has been quoted by the media as saying that Headley was courteous and never created trouble. Her husband KM Kriplani, who died recently, was alive when Headley stayed at the apartment.

Mrs Kriplani was also quoted as saying that she was shocked when she came to know about Headley from the newspapers. Headley reportedly stayed at the apartment for seven or eight days at a time and then would disappear for two or three months.
